Abstract

The Baju Kurung Melayu Riau is a traditional attire that represents far more than mere clothing; it serves as a valuable reflection of history and culture, an identity marker of the Malay community, and an important part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage. This study focuses on describing the characteristics of the Riau Malay Baju Kurung, explaining the philosophical and social values embedded within it, and discussing strategies for its preservation and development as an inseparable component of national culture. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a literature study approach by examining various primary and secondary sources related to the history, functions, and meanings of the Baju Kurung Melayu. The findings reveal that the Riau Malay Baju Kurung is distinguished by its simple, elegant, and modest design, while also being rich in symbolism reflected in its patterns, color choices, and manner of use in accordance with Malay traditions and social norms. Furthermore, this attire functions not only as everyday wear and ceremonial clothing but also as a medium for transmitting noble values across generations. In conclusion, the Baju Kurung Melayu Riau is a cultural treasure that must be continuously preserved and promoted through education, design innovation that still respects traditional values, and government support to ensure its sustainability as an intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia.
